This is the story of Mark and Jonette, former owners of a renowned South African restaurant in Buckinghamshire, UK, who, after 20 years in the hospitality industry, embarked on a new adventure. They fell in love with a 200-year-old, run-down Maison de Maitre and decided to move to the southwest of France just before Brexit. Despite their initial plan to live in Cape Town, Jonette’s love for open spaces, abundant sunshine, long beaches, and winelands, reminiscent of her homeland, convinced Mark to explore this charming corner of France.

Mark found a beautiful old stone house in need of extensive renovation through an online video tour. With their hearts set on the dream of living in France, they packed up their home in England, sold their South African house, and set off for France, initially staying in Gites until they acquired their dream property. Over the course of three years, Mark restored the aging house into this beautiful bed and breakfast in Saint-Jean-d’Angély. The former stables were transformed into a two-story, one-bedroom space with an open-plan lounge, dining area, and kitchen, overlooking a beautiful garden and pool.

In the historic main house, a ground floor apartment with its own private entrance was created. This elegant and stylish accommodation features a lounge and a fully equipped kitchen, with a French-style courtyard for morning coffee and croissants. These spaces are adorned with natural fabrics and carefully curated objects, providing guests with an inspiring and comfortable experience. Guests have access to the enticing pool area and delightful garden, and breakfast can be arranged upon request.

The property is located in the heart of Saint Jean D’Angely, a town that has retained its medieval charm, offering tranquility and absolute calm. The town boasts a rich history, along with shops, bars, restaurants, and a train station, all within walking distance. Every Saturday and Wednesday, the town hosts a local market with an abundance of local produce, including native oysters.

No 6 is surrounded by beautiful walks and cycling paths, situated just 5 minutes from junction 34 of the A10 autoroute, the main route to the South, Spain, and Portugal. The nearest sandy beaches are a 45-minute drive away, and Saintes is 25 km away, Cognac is a 45-minute drive, Bordeaux is 1 1/2 hours away, and the nearest airport, La Rochelle, is 70 km away.
